Coopernico - Green Energy Co-op from Portugal

In 2013, 16 social green entrepreneurs founded the first Green Energy Co-op of Portugal, Coopérnico, which aims to be a reference in Portugal and elsewhere regarding the use of collaborative financing, democratic decision-making, shared value and green energy production. The co-op, now with more than 90 members, has already raised 150.000 € which were invested in five social entrepreneurship projects in Portugal producing more than 56 Kwh of green energy through solar-photovoltaic panels. Investors gain a 4% interest over their investment while social organizations that rent their roofs get 25% of the revenue created by selling green energy back to the grid.

Anticipating the change in the law, which now allows individual consumers to also be producers and distributers of clean energy, Coopérnico has set the standards for a new model of energy production and distribution in Portugal aiming for a 1MwH production till the end of 2015.
